I sketched people outside of the dorm from my 4th floor dorm room. This allowed me to draw everyone at ground level with very little chance of the subject knowing that I was drawing them.
Bert, I like the seated poses better than the standing one because they have more line variety and are grounded better. If you draw sidewalks, street curbs and traffic signs, give them form and dimension - if only with a little shading.
Your shading line is okay - keep its direction consistent and align it to surfaces - that is, don't use different directional lines to shade the same surface.
